A former Detroit Public Schools accountant has been sentenced to 70 months behind bars for colluding with her daughter to steal $530,000 from the district through fake billings, CBS Detroit reported.
A jury found Sandra Campbell, 60, guilty of conspiracy, money laundering conspiracy and tax charges. A judge also ordered her to pay DPS back.
“This sentence sends a powerful message that fraudulently converting DPS resources for personal gain and thereby depriving students of the tools they need to prepare for educational and employment opportunities will not be tolerated,” said U.S. Attorney Barbara McQuade, CBS reported. “If you steal DPS resources, you will get caught and you will be prosecuted.”
McQuade said the Campbells stole $530,000 from DPS using a phone business as a front. Orders for school books and other classroom materials were placed with the Campbells’ fakes company, then they never followed through on the orders, My Fox Detroit reported.
Campbell’s daughter, 38-year-old Domonique Campbell, was a DPS teacher and faces sentencing in January.
