A 30-year-old New Jersey man was shot and killed as he tried to leave a mall parking lot with his wife, the apparent victim of a couple of carjackers who confronted them as they tried to get in their vehicle.
Acting Essex County prosecutor Carolyn Murray said the shooting took place Sunday evening at The Mall at Short Hills, The Associated Press reported. Two men confronted the couple on the second floor of the mall’s parking deck and shot the man in the head.
Hoboken resident Dustin Friedland was shot after 9 p.m. Sunday, and he was pronounced dead at a hospital shortly before midnight, the AP said, adding that his wife was not wounded.
The shooter and his partner then sped off in the couple’s silver 2012 Range Rover, AP reported.
Police are still looking for the carjackers and the vehicle, and a local anti-crime organization is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to their arrest and conviction, AP said.
