The fake holiday Festivus — started by the television character Frank Costanza on the long-running comedy series “Seinfeld” — is making a splash in real life, at statehouses in both Wisconsin and Florida.
Secular groups are putting up giant, made-up holiday Festivus poles at both buildings, Mediaite reported. And Florida’s pole — 6 feet in height — was made out of empty beer cans.
The poles are actually secular-driven protests to the statehouses’ more traditional Christmas and Christian-based displays.
“I still chuckle, I literally can’t believe there will be a pile of Pabst Blue Ribbon cans in the state rotunda,” said Chaz Stevens, a Deerfield Beach, Fla., resident who applied to the state’s Department of Management Services to erect the Festivus pole, Mediaite reported.
In Madison, Wis., the Statehouse is home to a 30-foot Christmas tree, and another secular-based display — a “room at the inn” assemblage that includes Charles Darwin, Albert Einstein and Mark Twain. The Festivus pole will join that display shortly, Mediaite said.
