A bomb scare at France’s famous Eiffel Tower sent tourists and staff members fleeing, after authorities issued a swift evacuation order on Friday.
Investigators are on scene, combing the 1,062-foot tower for signs of suspicious packages or bombs, the Associated Press reported.
The tower is the frequent target of bomb threats — but what’s different this time is that it’s taking longer than usual for police to confirm a hoax and reopen doors to tourists, AP reported.
Reuters said the structure was shut hours ago. The tower was built in 1889, and an estimated 30,000 people visit it each day during peak summer seasons, AP reported. On average, 7 million visit the tower each year.
