Ariel Castro’s Cleveland home — the prison for three Ohio women for roughly a decade — will be demolished Wednesday morning, authorities said.
But left unanswered, The Associated Press reported: How did such horrific crimes go unnoticed by neighbors for a decade?
The razing is part of Castro’s plea deal. He’s been spared the death penalty in exchange for life in prison plus 1,000 years.
Castro, 53, faced 977 criminal counts, ranging from kidnapping to rape to aggravated murder. He abducted three women and held them for a period of 11 years. One of the women gave birth in captivity.
His family members visited the home on Monday and retrieved several items — among them, photographs and guitars, AP reported.
Prosecutors say Castro actually broke into tears when he signed his over house deed and spoke of the “many happy memories” he shared at the house with the three women he abducted and held hostage.
