OPINION:
Though neither is particularly qualified and both benefit from being their fathers’ daughters, there is a substantial distinction between the candidacies of Caroline Kennedy for ambassador to Japan and Liz Cheney for senator from Wyoming (“Liz Cheney run is the ’wrong race at the wrong time,’ Wyoming Sen. John Barrasso says,” Web, July 17).
President Obama has nominated Ms. Kennedy for the ambassador post, and she will certainly be confirmed by the Democratic-controlled Senate. Ms. Cheney, on the other hand, will have to be chosen by the voters of Wyoming in a primary election against a three-term incumbent, Sen. Michael B. Enzi, who has a very high approval rating and party-official support.
Ms. Kennedy’s ambassadorship will be conferred on her by her party’s establishment, while Ms. Cheney will have to earn her Senate seat by persuading voters to overrule her party’s establishment. It’s the difference between being selected and being elected.
