A Republican lawmaker isn’t giving up the fight to make English the official language of Wisconsin and has reintroduced a bill this week that would do just that.
State Rep. Andre Jacque said all government documents that originate in Wisconsin — at state and local levels — should be written in English, he said, as The Associated Press reported. His bill, which mirrors what was brought before the state Legislature in 2009 by former state Rep. Marlin Schneider, a Democrat, would allow for certain exemptions, based on case-by-case considerations. That bill didn’t make it even to the hearing stage.
Under Mr. Jacque’s bill, the government couldn’t block anybody from learning a foreign language, either, AP reported.
Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald co-sponsored the 2009 bill but hasn’t yet done the same with Mr. Jacque’s bill.
