It’s like that old adage: Never bring a knife to a gun fight.

But one unaware Florida would-be robber forgot that basic rule while trying — to his ultimate detriment — to rob a pizza delivery man from Domino’s at knife point over the weekend at a Days Inn motel parking lot in West Melbourne.

The Brevard Times reported that Fredrick Lorenza Kelly Jr., 32, approached Domino’s deliverer Bryon Park, 54, wielded a large knife, threatened to kill him and demanded money. Police said Mr. Park turned back to his vehicle and grabbed the gun he normally carries for protection.

He shot toward Mr. Kelly, The Blaze reported.

“Preliminary evidence in the case demonstrates that the intended victim of the robbery acted in self-defense while being robbed by a violent criminal who was armed with a knife,” Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey said in the report.

Mr. Kelly died at the hospital. His police record included convictions and arrests for armed robbery, aggravated battery and false imprisonment. He was released from jail in 2009, the paper reported.
