New York City mayoral hopeful Anthony Weiner issued a statement Monday to celebrate Women’s Equality Day, arguing that society is better off when men and women have an equal playing field.

“When women have equal rights, our society is better off,” the embattled Democrat said in an email to supporters, the Washington Examiner first reported. “This is one of my long-held beliefs and it’s why I have been such a staunch supporter of women’s rights my entire career. “

Mr. Weiner has slipped to fourth place amid another sexting scandal, nearly a full year after the same type of behavior forced him to resign from Congress in disgrace.

President Obama proclaimed Aug. 26, 2013 as Women’s Equality Day.

The president said his administration has been “committed to advancing the historic march toward gender equality” from when he first took office.

“We have fought for equal pay, prohibited gender discrimination in America’s healthcare system, and established the White House Council on Women and Girls, which works to ensure fair treatment in all matters of public policy,” Mr. Obama said.
