SONOMA, CALIF. (AP) - Justin Wilson avoided all the drama at Sonoma Raceway on the way to a strong result.
Wilson finished second to Will Power on Sunday, coming in 1.1 seconds behind and leading 10 laps during his best performance of the season.
“It was a little bit of a lottery,” Wilson said. “Being at the right place at the right time, trying to finish it off and finish on the podium.”
The Dale Coyne Racing driver started on black tires on the sandy, tricky course while nearly everyone else went off on the red alternate tires. He also got spun in Turn 7 and pitted out of sequence early on, forcing his team to scramble while Wilson struggled to get through the clouds of dust kicked up by drivers and the unpredictable winds.
“Every corner is like ice,” Wilson said. “There were so many people running off, trying to make moves. It’s just the way it goes.”
But the British driver made up ground during some of the record seven cautions and gradually got back to the front for an impressive result in his third podium finish of the season.
