Former Secretary of State Colin Powell said the acquittal of George Zimmerman, the former neighborhood watchman who was charged in the shooting death of unarmed teen Trayvon Martin, was “questionable.”
Still, cases such as Trayvon’s “blaze across the midnight sky” and are forgotten, Mr. Powell said on CBS’ “Face the Nation,” The Associated Press reported.
The first black chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and first black secretary of state, who served in the George W. Bush administration, Mr. Powell said minorities have many more opportunities today, but Martin Luther King Jr. would still demand work on education, housing and economic opportunities, the AP reported.
Mr. Powell recalled being refused service when trying to buy a hamburger before the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the AP said.
