Believe me, said Rep. Kerry L. Bentivolio, Michigan Republican, to a crowd of his constituents at a town-hall meeting this week.
It would be a “dream come true” to be the lawmaker who writes the bill to impeach President Obama. But so far, there’s not enough proof of impeachable offenses, he said, as Politico reported.
He knows; he’s asked his attorneys.
“I have had lawyers come in … [and] I said, ’Tell me how I can impeach the president of the United States. [And they said], ’what evidence do you have?’ You’ve got to have the evidence,” he said in the Politico report.
He made the remarks at a local Republican meeting in Birmingham, Mich., in answer to a woman in the audience who asked about the potential to impeach the president and “stop this runaway train that we have in the White House,” Politico reported.
His answer: “If I could write that bill and submit it, it would be a dream come true.”
YouTube’s video of the meeting and the congressman’s remarks have since gained quite a following.
Mr. Bentivolio also told the crowd: “I feel your pain, I know. I stood 12 feet away from the guy [Mr. Obama] and listened to him and I couldn’t stand being there. But because he is president, I have to respect the office. That’s my job.”
The idea of impeaching Mr. Obama at this point is impossible, he said. Any legislator who tried would become the “laughingstock” of the media — which he called “the most corrupt thing in Washington.”
Mr. Bentivolio is serving his first term on Capitol Hill.
