A German woman who was vacationing in Hawaii when she was bit by a shark died from her injuries on Wednesday, a week after she was admitted to the hospital for emergency treatment.
Her arm had been chewed off in the attack, which took place off the island of Maui on Aug. 14, while she was snorkelling. Jana Lutteropp was believed to have been around the age of 20 when she died, CNN reported.
She was “a very beautiful, strong young woman who was always laughing, and we will forever remember her that way,” her mother and sister said in a joint statement, reported by CNN. “Jana fought hard to stay alive. However, we are sad to say that she lost her fight.”
Within days of that attack, another swimmer was bit by a shark off the coast of Hawaii. This time, it was a 16-year-old boy who was surfing when a shark struck him on his legs. He’s still recovering in the hospital.
