Anthony Weiner is under fire for something other than his history of raunchy online chats after taking indirect aim at the food-service industry.
Mr. Weiner, a Democratic candidate for New York City mayor, made the comments Tuesday night, explaining how the city has created too many “poor-people jobs” in recent years.
“We are losing middle-class jobs. We’re creating jobs at the very low end of the spectrum. We’re creating a lot of restaurant-worker jobs, a lot of poor-people jobs,” Mr. Weiner said. “We have to stop that. We have to try and make this a middle-class capital again.”
Mr. Weiner is attempting to rehabilitate his political career after leaving Congress in disgrace in 2011, but he faces an uphill climb in the Democratic primary contest for mayor.
A recent Wall Street Journal-NBC-Marist College survey found that Mr. Weiner has the support of just 11 percent of New York City Democrats, far behind Public Advocate Bill de Blasio and City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, each of whom garnered 24 percent.
