The Pentagon said Tuesday that it still providing aid to Egypt’s army, despite reports that U.S. military assistance has been halted amid the ongoing crisis in the North African country.
“All aspects of our assistance to Egypt are under review, but there has been no decision made to halt or to suspend assistance,” Pentagon press secretary George Little said, pushing back against published reports.
The Daily Beast reported late Monday that the U.S. had quietly, temporarily suspended the disbursement of most direct military aid, the delivery of weapons to the Egyptian military and some forms of economic aid.
“This is current practice, not necessarily official policy, and there is no indication of how long it will last,” David Carle, an aide on the Senate Appropriations subcommittee on foreign operations, told the Associated Press on Monday.
Nearly 1,000 people were killed in the past week in Egypt after security forces violently disbanded two sit-ins protesting the military’s July 3 ouster of Islamist President Mohammed Morsi.
