Gay couples in Rhode Island turned out in force to take advantage of the state’s new right-to-marry laws, which went into effect this week. But not all sought unions.
Some wanted divorces, The Associated Press reported.
Attorney Neville Bedford said to WPRI-TV that his client — a gay female who had married in Massachusetts in 2008 — had relocated to Rhode Island for work, but then wanted to get divorced in 2011. She couldn’t because Rhode Island didn’t recognize gay marriage, never mind gay divorce.

Mr. Bedford filed her divorce paperwork on Thursday — at the same time other same-sex couples were rushing to obtain marriage certificates, AP reported.
