An investigation into basketball superstar LeBron James’ alleged police escort to a Jay-Z and Justin Timberlake concert Friday night has revealed that Miami-Dade’s department broke protocol by giving Mr. James the star treatment with taxpayer dollars.

Mr. James, who plays for the NBA champion Miami Heat, posted a short video of himself saying he was following “a police escort on the wrong side of the street” to get to the concert at Sun Life Stadium in Miami Gardens, Fla. The video shows his vehicle behind others with police lights flashing.

Miami-Dade police originally claimed on the record that they had no involvement with the escort, but now a department spokesperson has confirmed that its officers were the ones who accompanied Mr. James to the show, TMZ reported.

According to TMZ, the representative said the NBA star “was stuck in standstill traffic at 191st street last night and its officers escorted him to the Sun Life Stadium on 199th street — a total of 8 blocks.”

“This should not have happened,” the spokesperson said, adding that the department is still looking into which officers were involved and will determine what punishment, if any, is appropriate.
