Sgt. Sean Murphy, the Massachusetts state trooper who leaked photographs of Boston bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev’s real look during his capture and arrest — not the rock-star image portrayed by Rolling Stone magazine — is back on the job, a spokesman for the department said Thursday.
He’s been sent to the Athol barracks in the northern-central part of the state, The Associated Press reported. Spokesman David Procopio said the assignment is not punishment.
Sgt. Murphy served a short stint on desk duty before his return to duty last week at the new post. The investigation of his photo release is still ongoing.
He didn’t deny he released the photos, which displayed the bombing suspect covered in blood. But he said he was frustrated at the image slapped on Rolling Stone’s cover, depicting the 19-year-old in a glamour shot that reminded many of The Doors’ frontman, Jim Morrison.
Sgt. Murphy’s actions sparked a huge community swell of support that even saw a Facebook page launched in his honor, titled “Save Sgt. Murphy.”
