Police are investigating the theft of thousands of dollars worth of guns and ammunition from a Boy Scout organizations’ building in the western region of New York.
Iroquois Trail Council of the Boy Scouts of America say $4,000 worth of weapons and ammo were taken from its storage building in Lockport, N.Y., located in Niagara County, The Associated Press reported. It’s not clear when the theft occurred, but police say the facility appears to have been broken into earlier this month.
Among the stolen items were four shotguns, four rifles and a compound bow, police said.
“It’s distressing to us of course that items of this nature would be out on the street,” said the executive for the Iroquois Trail Council, Jim McMullen, to WIVB-TV. “These items were stored in a locked cabinet inside the office. So that door was kicked in, in order to gain entry.”
Several adjacent offices were also broken into, police said. The Niagara County Sheriff’s Office is investigating, AP reported.
The Boy Scouts reportedly used the weapons to participate in marksmanship and gun-safety classes during summer camp.
