A German woman snorkeling in Hawaii was in critical condition Thursday after a shark attacked her and chewed off her arm, medical responders said.

The woman was unconscious after the bite, CNN reported. She was snorkeling at White Rock beach in Maui on Wednesday when the shark attacked. Authorities on Thursday said they were still trying to determine whether or not to reopen the beach.

This is the fourth time a shark has attacked a swimmer or boater in Maui this year, CNN reported. Two occurred on the same day in February and another in late July.

The woman’s name was not released, but she is being treated at Maui Medical Center and expected to live.
