Parents in one Arizona school district have expressed concerns with a contract from education administrators that asks them to sign a pledge to keep away guns from their children.
The pledge, put forth by the Flowing Wells Unified School District in Tucson, is part of the the district’s middle- and high-school registration process, Fox News reported.
Parents are asked to “keep any guns and all weapons under lock and away from school grounds and away from my children,” the text of the pledge reads, The Arizona Daily Independent reported.
School officials say it’s aimed at educating parents and children about the “dangers and consequences” of misusing weapons, Fox News said.
But at least two parents have complained. They say the contract was written years ago, but only now slipped quietly through the review process by district Superintendent David Baker. And they’re not reassured by district officials who say that parents who refuse to sign won’t be singled out for negative consequences.
Arizona law allows guns to be openly carried — though not on school grounds. Some Second Amendment groups, however, are fighting to bring carry laws onto school campuses in order to prevent shootings like the Sandy Hook disaster last December from occurring.
