CNN host Piers Morgan, during another emotional interview with a gun rights advocate, said Tuesday that he’d prefer not to see all women in America armed with weapons — and he couldn’t even say if his wife should be armed if she faced a deadly home intruder.
Breitbart writer A.W.R. Hawkins told Mr. Morgan that America had far fewer violent crimes than Britain, in part because Americans can own and defend themselves with guns. Guns are the great gender equalizer, he suggested.
“My problem is I don’t want to see all the women in America armed with guns,” Mr. Morgan replied, saying that “where there are guns,” there is a “much higher incidence” of gun-related domestic violence cases.
Mr. Hawkins then referred to a Georgia case in which an armed woman defended her children from an intruder who chased them into the attic. At the advice of her husband, who was on the phone, she shot the intruder five times.
“I would like my wife to be armed, were she in that position,” Mr. Hawkins said. “Wouldn’t you want your wife to be armed were she to be in that position?”
Mr. Morgan dodged the question and did not reply.
Later in the segment, Mr. Hawkins referred to places with high rates of violence such as Chicago, and said that 10 percent of the 400-plus killed in the city in 2011 were women.
“I would prefer that those women have guns to protect their lives,” he said.
Mr. Morgan scoffed at the notion.
“I would tell that to the families of the women who were killed at Sandy Hook,” Mr. Morgan said. “I’m not sure they would quite see it the same way.”
