The recent closing of numerous American embassies was a win-win for al Qaeda (which we were told had been “decimated”) over America. Consider the following: al Qaeda now knows exactly what channels and frequencies we monitor and can use that knowledge to its advantage. It now has a perfect recruiting theme (America will run away at the first sign of trouble), and it is getting stronger while America gets weaker. (After all, which horse would you rather ride: the stronger one or the weaker one that runs away?)

The problem with merely reacting to situations rather than being proactive is that the other person dictates the terms. This administration seems always to be reactive rather than proactive in any situation, and its first reactive impulse is to run away.
