A peaceful Serbian village was shattered Tuesday after a 60-year-old man described as a “good neighbor” went on a shooting spree and killed 13, including a baby, police said.
Belgrade hospital spokeswoman Nada Macura said the suspect, known only by his first name and last initial, Liubisa B., used a handgun in the spree, which ended when he tried to kill himself and his wife, The Associated Press reported. Among the dead were six women, she said.
The man, his wife and another person were severely injured. The man had no history of mental illness, Ms. Macura said in the AP report.
“He knocked on the doors, and as they were opened he just fired a shot,” said one local villager, in the AP report. “He was a good neighbor and anyone would open their doors to him. I don’t know what happened.”
The shooting occurred in the village of Velika Ivanca, about 30 miles outside Belgrade.
He started his spree with the fatal shooting of his son at his own home, AP said. His motive was unclear; residents said in the AP report he was a quiet man but lost his job last year.
