A magnitude 6.3 earthquake has struck 55 miles outside Bushehr, Iran, where the nation’s only nuclear power station is based.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake hit just six miles below the surface.
Radio Free Europe said there were no immediate reports of casualties or of damage. Reuters, meanwhile, reported the effects of the quake were felt as far away as Dubai, across the Gulf. And BBC said people on social media sites in Abu Dhabi said they felt the shockwaves, also.
Tehran has maintained for months that its operations at Bushehr are for peaceable purposes to benefit the civilian, not military, sector. The West sees Iran on a fast-track pursuit of nuclear weapons, in defiance of U.N. sanctions.
