Connecticut Gov. Dannel P. Malloy had harsh words of criticism for National Rifle Association head Wayne LaPierre during a Sunday appearance on CNN.

“Wayne reminds me of the clowns at the circus — they get the most attention. That’s what he’s paid to do,” Mr. Malloy said on CNN.

He also said of Mr. LaPierre during the CNN appearance: “This guy is so out of whack, it’s unbelievable.”

His comments came in response to Mr. LaPierre’s criticism of newly passed Connecticut gun regulations — some of the strictest in the nation. The law adds almost 100 types of firearms to the state’s banned list and prohibits sales of magazines that hold more than 10 rounds of ammunition.

Mr. LaPierre has called the law needless — and ineffective. In numerous media appearances, he has said that the bans would do little to slow or halt crime. For instance, in a previous interview in Fox News, Mr. LaPierre said of the Connecticut gun bans, “I mean, all you’re doing is making the law books bigger for the law-abiding people.”
