Uruguay President Jose Mujica committed a diplomatic blunder Thursday when he failed to notice his microphone’s on button and referred to his counterpart, Argentina’s Cristina Kirchner, and her husband, with a disparaging comments.

“This old hag is worse than the cross-eyed man,” Mr. Mujica said to an official sitting nearby at a news conference, Agence France-Presse reported. He apparently didn’t know his microphone was on, AFP said.

But local news outlet El Observador did — and posted the audio on its website.

Ms. Kirchner’s husband, Nestor Kirchner, had a fatal heart attack in 2010.

Mr. Mujica, who took office in 2010, denied to other newspapers that he had spoken about Argentina, AFP reported.
