The owners of a Brooklyn apartment complex have been sued for what plaintiffs have described as a whites-only policy that turned away black applicants.
The advocacy group Fair Housing Justice Center filed the federal civil rights suit Monday, after sending several “testers” to the apartment to query about openings and file an application. The group’s finding: Whites received a more welcoming reception, The New York Post reported.
The group alleged the apartment superintendents “repeatedly lied to the African-American testers about the availability of apartments, telling them that no apartments would be available … even as they were at the same time showing an immediately available apartment to the white testers,” The Post reported.
One building superintendent said in The Post that he didn’t discriminate and that he actually owned apartment buildings that were rented to blacks.
