A five-year-old girl recovering in the hospital from a rape in India died on Monday from cardiac arrest.

The girl was attacked on April 18 in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, The Associated Press reported, and two men have subsequently been arrested.

One of the men arrested allegedly lured her to a farm, where she was raped by the other man. The suspected rapist was also a friend of the girl’s parents, said Bharat Yadav, a spokesman for the Seoni district where the attack took place, AP reported.

The girl had a brain injury when the men tried to stifle her cries during the rape. She fell into a coma on April 20 and never regained consciousness, AP said.

This is the second similar attack on a 5-year-old in just a month, AP said. Just a few weeks ago, another 5-year-old was kidnapped, raped and tortured by two men. She was then locked in a room in New Delhi. That girl is still recovering in a hospital, AP reported.

That girl’s attack sparked massive community outrage when police refused to investigate the initial complaint from her parents that she was missing, AP reported.

And both these attacks come just four months after the brutal and fatal gang rape of a woman on a New Delhi bus.
