A 24-year-old man rushed the choir at the tail end an Albuquerque, N.M., church service on Sunday, brandishing a knife and ultimately stabbing four.
Witnesses said to CNN that he jumped over several pews to get to the choir, screaming, “Fake preacher!” The incident occurred at St. Jude Thaddeus Catholic Church, The Associated Press said.
“I looked up, and I saw a young man with a very scary look in his eyes — fury, anger, hatred,” one choir member told CNN. “He had a knife and was attacking our soloist, and our flutist tried to protect him and got stabbed also.”
It was not clear what sparked the attack. Police aren’t sure if the attack was random, or if the attacker had ties to the victim, or if he even attended the church on a regular basis, AP reported.
Police said the suspect was Lawrence Capener, AP reported.
The four stabbing victims all received treatment, but their wounds weren’t serious, CNN reported.
