A federal judge ordered the Mississippi man who was charged with making a poison and mailing it President Obama to be held without bail on Monday.
The suspected, James Everett Dutschke, 41, was arrested on Saturday, after a week of investigation that led police to search his Tupelo home and his former place of business. Police initially looked at Mr. Dutschke’s friend as the key suspect.
Mr. Dutschke’s Monday court appearance was brief, The Associated Press reported. He has denied involvement in the mailings — he’s suspected of sending ricin-laced correspondence to the president and others — and will stay behind bars until a more detailed hearing takes place on Thursday.
At that upcoming hearing, prosecutors will go into specifics about their evidence, AP reported. They will have to prove they have enough evidence to continue to hold him in jail, AP reported.
Mr. Dutschke said little at the hearing and only answered the judge’s questions, AP said.
He’s charged with sending letters on April 8 to the president, U.S. Sen. Roger Wicker and Mississippi Judge Sadie Holland.
