San Francisco firefighters are raking in enough overtime pay to become millionaires in a few short years.

For example, one lieutenant just collected $221,000 in overtime last year — bringing his total yearly salary to $363,000, The Associated Press reported. Citywide, the fire department already spent $38 million in overtime pay in just the first two months of the fiscal year, AP reported. And fire officials have asked the local government to approve more than $4 million more for this quarter’s overtime costs.

Union leaders say the overtime is needed, due to staffing shortages.

The fire department has let 400 positions go unfilled, said union president Tom O’Connor, in the AP report.

Meanwhile, the fire chief admits current overtime policies are not sustainable, AP reported.
