Clashes in a chaotic region of China involving knives, axes and a gun left 21 dead and one home completely gutted by fire, a government spokeswoman said Wednesday.
Among the dead were nine Xinjiang residents, six police officers and six ethnic Uighurs in the deadliest regional violence since 2009, the unnamed government official said in an NBC report. In 2009, sectarian battles between Han Chinese and Uighurs killed almost 200.
This most recent attack on Tuesday was “certainly a terrorist attack,” the spokeswoman said in the NBC report. An untold number were burned to death in the house fire.
Eight people have been detained for questioning, police said in the NBC report.
