Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev were headed to New York City to “party” in the hours after the Boston Marathon bombing that killed three and injured nearly 200, police said Wednesday.
New York police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly said that information came from Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19, during hospital questioning, NBC reported. The two brothers planned to go to Manhattan in the sport utility vehicle they hijacked, various media reported.
The statement is significant because police now believe the brothers weren’t planning additional terrorist attacks in New York, Commissioner Kelly said in the NBC report. Rather, they were rather headed to the Big Apple to celebrate, the commissioner said.
New York City residents weren’t in harm’s way, police said.
