A Dutch diplomat was sentenced Tuesday to 12 years in prison for spying for Russia and handing over sensitive and confidential NATO and European Union documents.
Judges with The Hague District Court handed Raymond Poeteray the sentence, saying he put at risk the national security and interests of the Dutch state and of Dutch allies, The Associated Press reported.
Mr. Poeteray had been passing along to Russian entities political and military documents for years, the court found. In exchange, he received $94,000, AP reported.
The spying took place over a period of two years, between January 2009 and August 2011, AP said. Mr. Poeteray was arrested in March 2012.
He had worked for the Netherlands’ Foreign Affairs Ministry.
