Pakistan’s caretaker government has dropped its pursuit of treason against former President Pervez Musharraf.
Attorney General Irfan Qadir said in court documents filed Monday that pursuing the charges are outside the scope of the caretaker government’s jurisdiction, Radio Free Europe reported. Only the cabinet members who are elected May 11 hold that authority, he wrote. Whether they pursue the charges remains to be seen.
Mr. Musharraf rose to power in a 1999 coup. He held the presidency until 2008, but was charged with treason for attempting to halt the country’s constitution and firing several top judges.
He’s under house arrest right now, following a recent court hearing that revoked his bail.
He also faces charges for failing to give opposition leader Benazir Bhutto adequate security in 2007, Radio Free Europe reported. Bhutto was murdered.
