A sport utility vehicle carrying at least 18 people crashed and killed five after the driver tried to flee from Border Patrol agents in Arizona on Monday.
The other 13 occupants of the SUV were injured, United Press International reported. They were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment, some by helicopter.
Another source, the Pima County Rural/Metro Fire Department, said 22 people were in the SUV.
Border Patrol agents attempted to stop the SUV for an immigration check, UPI reported. The driver of the SUV refused to stop and headed west on Interstate 10 through Vail, trying to evade border agents and ultimately flipping on an exit ramp, UPI reported.
“Preliminary reports indicate that the driver of the Tahoe lost control on the exit ramp and rolled the vehicle, resulting in multiple fatalities and injuries,” law enforcement said in a statement reported by UPI.
