A task force of legislators from both sides of the political aisle has crafted new gun laws for Connecticut that would add more than 100 types of weapons to the state’s banned list.
The proposal would also limit ammunition magazines to 10 rounds, outright prohibit armor-piercing bullets and mandate background checks for all potential gun purchases, CBS reports. The proposal addresses the mental health aspect of the gun control debate, too. It provides teachers with mental health training and broadens the state’s research on mental health-related issues. It also sets in place statewide safety and security standards for all schools, CBS reports.
“Nobody will be able to say that this bill is absolutely perfect, but no one will also be able to say that this bill fails the test when it comes to being the strongest in the country and the most comprehensive bill in the country,” said Connecticut Senate President Don Williams, a Democrat and a member of the task force, as quoted by CBS.
Legislators will reportedly take the task force’s plan under discussion during Wednesday’s General Assembly session. And gun rights activists are gearing for fight.
“There is nothing in this package that would have stopped someone like Adam Lanza,” said Scott Wilson, president of the Connecticut Citizens Defense League, of the Dec. 14 shootings in Newtown, Conn. “In his case, he stole the guns and went on a murderous rampage.
