Hackers from the group Anonymous have claimed responsibility for an attack on Westboro Baptist Church’s Facebook page as retribution for the group’s call to picket and protest funerals for the Boston bombing victims.
The Clarion Ledger reported that Anonymous changed Westboro’s profile page to a parody and also posted comedic videos and memes. Anonymous also backdated some of Westboro’s postings, the newspaper reported.
Westboro, headquartered in Topeka, Kan., had put out a statement after Monday’s attacks that headlined: “Thank God for the Boston Marathon bombs.” The group also called for protests at the funerals and said the attacks were not “senseless act[s] of terrorism,” but rather a “foretaste of God’s wrath,” as Newsmax reported.
Anonymous, in response, warned Westboro of an attack.
The Facebook hacking includes photos that poke fun at Wesetboro members. Newsmax reported the group’s leaders, after the hack, were listed as satanical rock star Marilyn Manson, Anonymous and Captain Crunch.
