A civil rights watchdog said Thursday that Syrian rebel fighters have captured the majority of a strategically located military base from President Bashar Assad’s forces.
Called Dabaa military complex, the base is near Qusair, by a crucial highway that connects Damascus to the coast, The Associated Press reported. The Observatory for Human Rights, based in Britain, said rebel forces now control most of the property.
The base includes an airfield, and the capture of it from Mr. Assad’s army is significant. The base, located in Homs province, near Syria’s border with Lebanon, was a key central stronghold for military forces, AP reported.
The civil war in Syria has waged more than two years and has led to the death of upwards of 70,000, the United Nations estimates.
