French authorities have detained four who are suspected of targeting and attacking gays at a bar, at a time when tensions are high and nationals split over a bill to legalize same-sex marriage.
Interior Ministry Manuel Valls said Thursday the four are charged with punching the manager of the known gay bar, which is located in Lille, and of damaging items, The Associated Press reported. They’re also accused of intentionally targeting gays to fight, AP said.
The incident came about the same time as another in Paris, in which a protest against gay marriage wrapped with violence against police. In the melee, cars were damaged, AP reported.
Both houses of parliament in France have approved a bill to legalize same-sex marriage. A second reading of the bill will take place this week.
