A judge approved a $700,000 settlement between McDonald’s and members of the Michigan Muslim community who claimed that a Detroit-area restaurant served food falsely advertised as compliant with Shariah law.
The case stems from September 2011, when lead plaintiff Ahmed Ahmed from Dearborn Heights bought a chicken sandwich from the restaurant, and then discovered it wasn’t halal, or permitted or lawful under Shariah doctrines, according to the Associated Press.
The settlement money will be distributed Mr. Ahmed, a Detroit health clinic, Dearborn’s Arab American National Museum and Mr. Ahmed’s attorneys.
Dearborn attorney Majed Moughni said he wasn’t satisfied with the settlement amount and that it didn’t help those most affected.
