A Mississippi mayoral candidate admitted this week that she once worked as a prostitute and owned a brothel.

Linda Fondren, who’s running for mayor of Vicksburg, at first told a reporter that her ties to Sagebrush Ranch, a legally operated brothel in Nevada that she owned with her husband 30 years ago, were rumors. She finally admitted her involvement, however, United Press International reported. She said she and her husband sold the brothel in 1992.

“I was a working girl in a legal brothel over 30 years ago,” Ms. Fondren said, in UPI. “It’s true my husband was my client. My husband and I have been married for 8 years.”

Ms. Fondren now runs Shape Up Vicksburg, a health and fitness group. She also said she can’t take back the past, UPI reported.

“I am who I am,” she said, UPI reported. “This is my story. It is what makes me who I am.”
