That’s “Sir Richard Lugar” to you.
Well, not really. But former Sen. Richard Lugar, the six-termer from Indiana who lost his primary fight to tea party favorite Richard Murdouck last May, has picked up a new title: He’s been awarded the Knight Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, or KBE, his office announced.
The sticking point is that he won’t actually tout the title of “sir,” Politico reported. That’s reserved for the queen’s real subjects
Mr. Lugar nevertheless joins a limited class of non-subjects that have been bestowed royal and queenly titles: Politico reported that George Mitchell, Ted Kennedy and John Warner are all senators-turned-knights. Former President Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush were also knighted, Politico reported.
Mr. Lugar’s ceremonial title comes for his support for NATO and his efforts to abolish weapons of mass destruction, Politico reported. On top of that, Mr. Lugar spent considerable time in England as a Rhodes Scholar.
Mr. Lugar’s knighting ceremony is Tuesday, Politico reported.
