Eight prison officials at a Georgia facility have been indicted on accusations they repeatedly attacked inmates.
The Associated Press said the indictment named a deputy warden and seven specially trained guards — members of the Correctional Emergency Response Team — and was filed this week in U.S. District Court. Court papers said the guards carried out the attacks on repeated occasions as far back as 2010.
One example: Five of the guards are accused of attacking an inmate — or standing by as the attack took place against one inmate — in the prison gym, in mid-December 2010, AP reported.
Guards are also accused of trying to cover up investigation into the alleged attacks, AP said.
The facility is Macon State Prison in Oglethorpe.
