Secretary of State John Kerry said he is going to visit with the parents of slain diplomat Anne Smedinghoff during a stop in Chicago on Monday.
The planned stop comes as Mr. Kerry wraps his 10-day overseas tour, ending with Japan, The Associated Press reported. Mr. Kerry first learned of Ms. Smedinghoff’s death on April 6, as he was preparing for his swing through Turkey, and he contacted the parents to give condolences, AP said.
Ms. Smedinghoff, 25, and four other Americans were killed when a car bomb exploded as they walked to a school, AP said.
Mr. Kerry said in Tokyo that she was “full of ideals and full of hopes, taking books to children in a school so they can learn,” but that she was “wiped out by terrorism — the worst kind of nihilism,” AP reported.
