FORT WORTH, TEXAS (AP) - Army Staff Sgt. Fabian Hall grew up watching his grandmother cook. And learning how to do cook himself.
This weekend, the veteran who served two tours in Iraq and is a cancer survivor cooked for the King and his team.
Hall was in the garage at Texas Motor Speedway, where the NASCAR fan was cooking on the grill at the No. 43 hauler for seven-time Cup champion Richard Petty’s team.
Before Saturday night’s race, Hall was making a macaroni and cheese casserole mixed with peppers, onion, garlic and sausage from team sponsor Eckrich, which teamed with Operation Homefront to honor and thank him and his family for all their sacrifice.
“They’ve been awesome,” Hall said as he put the finishing touches on his own recipe. “Add this to the list of things I never thought I’d get to do.”
Hall was surprised Thursday outside a Fort Worth grocery store when Aric Almirola drove up in a No. 43 car and asked if he’d help grill for the team this weekend.
This is Almirola’s second season working with Operation Homefront, a national non-profit organization that provides emergency financial assistance to the families of United States service members and wounded warriors.
