Prominent religious right leader Tony Perkins called on conservatives to stop donating money to congressional Republicans until the party quits its soft talk on gay marriage.
Mr. Perkins, who heads the Family Research Council, a conservative Christian think tank, sent an email Thursday to the organization’s supporters, urging them to hold the GOP accountable for its shifting stance on the issue.
“Until the RNC and the other national Republican organizations grow a backbone and start defending core principles, don’t send them a dime of your hard-earned money,” Mr. Perkins said in the email, which was obtained by CNN. “If you want to invest in the political process, and I encourage you to do so, give directly to candidates who reflect your values and organizations you trust — like FRC Action.”
The RNC recently said a softer stance for gay marriage was necessary for Republicans to win in coming years, especially with younger voters. But Mr. Perkins characterized such views as nonsensical.
“Instead of trying to appease millennials, Republicans should try educating them on why marriage matters,” Mr. Perkins wrote.
