I am the grandson of immigrants who came to this country legally even though at the time they were not eligible for citizenship. They provided their descendants with good examples of the success that productive work can bring. Hopefully, the same can be said of current illegal immigrants seeking citizenship.

However, if the proposed legislation does not address the incentives for people coming here without documents (jobs and financial assistance), then we may be facing the same problem in the future, leading to more illegal immigration. We need economic policies that make legal immigrants as attractive to employers as illegals, if not more so. We need to remind people that illegal immigrants are competing with them for domestic assistance.
