Flagstaff law enforcement have intercepted a package that contained an explosive device and was en route to Sheriff Joe Arpaio, the nationally known Arizona lawman whose tough talk and criminal crackdowns have angered many on the left.

The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office said the device was disabled by a bomb team on Thursday evening, CNN reported.

Mr. Arpaio has been sued by the Justice Department over civil rights infringements. In court documents, the Justice Department alleges that Mr. Arpaio has unfairly and with bias targeted Latinos. The complaint also alleges that he’s used racial profiling, and unlawfully detained and searched Latinos during raids and investigations.

Mr. Arpaio maintains his innocence. One of his lawyers said the Justice Department was simply going on a “witch hunt,” CNN reported.
